CTCstore MicroSD / MicroSDHC & Memory Stick Micro M2 USB 2.0 Card Reader

This works as advertised- You can connect your micro SD card to your computer via USB with this little device. It’s all plastic, smaller than the first joint of my pinky finger, and has no moving parts. It’s just a slot, with a USB connector on the other end.
While it does work, and your Micro SD card will show up as any other flash memory device, it does get HOT when it’s used for an extended period of time. I used this with an 8GB card, and after filling the card’s memory, this gizmo was hot to the touch. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, since we’re packing so much data into a space smaller than my fingernail, but it’s still something you should be aware of when handling it.
Seriously, though, if you have small children or plastic-eating pets around, do not get this. It’s so tiny that it could end up in doggie’s belly or Jr.’s mouth, nose, or ear pretty easily… Never to be seen again. It’s definitely what I’d constitute as a choking hazard for small children; It’s tiny enough to stick in the mouth, but just big enough to get lodged in a toddler’s trachea.
Normally I wouldn’t present such a warning, but this thing is SMALL with a capital ‘S’, and I just wanted to stress that it’s the kind of small that is easily lost.
This only worked if I was physically pressing the card into the reader – I emailed the seller and they never responded to my email to fix the problem. I ended up getting a different card reader from another retailer. However, I bought my SD card from this seller and that works fine – I’m guessing my reader was just defective.
This item did exactly what it was built to do, but after having it for about a month or two, I ended up getting a Vista from my dad. When I tried to interface the device with my dads computer, the card had a spat with the new OS, and locked my mini SD card into write protection hell. I ended up throwing away the mini SD card, and ordering another one. I wished I hadn’t because I found out after I got the new one that it wasn’t the card that was faulty, but this device had apparently found some way to break itself because my brand new mini SD card was also in write protection mode. I tried my card on a friends adapter on both my old XP which I had used with it a lot using, and the new Vista, and it worked fine, so the only logical culprit has to be this. I’m giving this item 3 stars because even though it ended up breaking on me, I have gotten good products that others complain about with quality, and I will admit that I may have been a little rough on it because I constantly carried it in my pocket, and I do tend to be active in my outdoor jeans. I will not order another one however, as I am looking for something sturdier than this.
Pretty much, I would recommend this to some of my co-workers or family, but certainly not any of my friends. Pay a little extra for the extra protection from shock. I found it odd that even though it was obviously broken, and it’s task is so simple and involves no moving parts, that the device even worked on my computer at all, even if it did lock my card. If you can take care of your adapter, you should enjoy a lifelong product.
The product seems very cheaply put together. It is plastic and light and seems like it could easily break. BUT so far it hasn’t broken, it works exactly like its supposed to and is perfect for those who don’t have the SD adapter or an SD slot on their PC.
Reader works great. I like the string and loop for attaching to a key chain. I’ve had one on my key chain about 2 years, with no problems. All the print has worn off but it works fine. I think I have the sandisk version. It’s small, light, plastic, and sturdy. I’d call it inexpensive, not cheap.
