This is my second electronics product from Amazon that was packed loose in the box.
Unfortunately Amazon completely ignored the fact that this product is very sensitive to shock and packed it with just a touch of packing material. The product was loose in the box, bobbing all over.
For now I have gingerly installed the drive, but if it fails it will be Amazon’s sloppy handling.
Mind you I pay Amazon for prime membership and related handling fees.
I strongly urge people to stay away from ordering electronics product from Amazon. They are apparently trying to save some money by skipping the packing material. It will increase the likelihood that your electronics products will FAIL MORE EASILY and MORE OFTEN.
Do not Buy Electronics from Amazon !!!
The drive has great capacity and works fast enough. However, after seeking it makes a very high pitched noise. It is not even that loud and yet I can’t stand it at all. Would not recommend based on this if you have any kind of sensitive hearing. Additionally the drive has no means to set it to run slower but with less noise unlike other drives.
This HD, which used to be the “biggest of them all”, works its way dutifully and, up to now, haven’t broken. I’ve got 2 on a RAID 1 array, and it just works.
As regards the drive’s versions: I bought one boxed and one OEM. They both work finely, so I don’t think you’ll need to pay the extra money for a box, 4 screws and the package.
I am sorry to disagree with HMMWV “(the real thing)” from Amazon when he writes: ”
Tomorrow is a whole different ballgame unfortunately”. Don’t we call that “progress”? I understand that if you want to have “the latest and greatest” hardware (And who hasn’t wanted to, even if later nothing really wonderful happens). But, due to this “Moore’s law”, we can have in a laptop the power that took the NASA a building and millions of dollars in the 60′ (not that far ago, given mankind’s history).
Enjoy!
I have had two of these drives fail. Neither had more than 30 hours of use. In fact I barely had all my applications installed. What was really nice was finding out the second one failed the morning of April 15 when I was attempting to boot up and submit my tax return.
Very disappointing. They’ll send me another drive but I’ll not be installing my operating system or any critical files on it. Just too unreliabe. In fact I don’t even know what I’m going to do with it. Seems silyy to have a back drive you have to backup onto another drive.
I don’t do any gaming or use any apps that place high demand on the hard drive. In fact the computer hasn’t even been plugged in for three months. I used to like Seagate but they have lost a customer for life. When two units fail like this in less than 80 hours total use I believe its a pretty good indication of how good the product is.
I should have listened to the reviewers before buying. But in the old days I had a Seagate last ten years without fail so my judgment was clouded. Clearly quality is a thing of the past with Seagate. These drives effectively wasted 30+ hours of my life.
Buy this drive if you like to talk to people in India otherwise try another vendor.
Got it in the mail, attached it to my PCI card, booted up and is dead. Called Seagate and they said return it.
