Seagate FreeAgent Desk 2 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive ST320005FDA2E1-RK

I have been building my own computers for the last 10 years. Have used internal and external drives from Maxtor, Seagate, and Western Digital. Seagate used to be my favorite brand but I’m starting to wonder about their quality. This drive failed on me on the FIRST use. I now have to return it to Amazon for a refund. Good thing returns to Amazon are painless. To think…I was going to use this thing as a BACKUP drive! Buy at your own risk. Before you buy, check out the reviews at other vendors sites.
I have had no problem with the 2TB free agent, and have bought a second one for a specific project. It feels no slower thant the 1TB or smaller external USBs I have had.
I decided to try another Seagate FreeAgent external USB 2.0 drive.
I have a similar 1.5TB model that’s been working 24/7 for over a year.
Imagine my digust when I found this 2TB variant to be dead on arrival, and it even fails all the built-in “Seagate Tools” tests!
What are those tools checking in the Seagate factory??
Guess what, you can’t even return it for an RMA without running and getting a failure from the “Seagate Tools” tests they skipped in the factory?!?
And a $20 fee to pay for the Seagate UPS return shipping label for dead on arrival product!!!
Who do you think you are kidding, Seagate??!
Not only that, the only replacements offered for your brand-new drive that’s DoA is rebuilt garbage from other returns with a 90-day-only warranty. No thanks… this is going back to the retailer.
Stay away from this drive at all costs!
I ran out of storage in my old 500GB Maxtor external drive few months ago, for the last couple of months I was looking around for a better device with full of storage capacity!. A quest I developed to find the next best mega storage drive?. So, recently I visited best buy and Frys Electronics stores, I also visited other stores like office max or office depo without any success to find something reliable for a good price, no luck at all.
Then, searched the internet for good reviews for an external drive. I have to tell you that you will be very disappointed with the available reviews on the internet.
Most of the reviews out there find flaws or problems or unsatisfactory issues on almost all the existing external drives. Mostly personal experiences of customers who bitterly express their views, you can’t blame them, because they are right about the external drives.
In the store or online, suppose you find a drive with some satisfactory rating, then to find the one right storage size is a pain, if you indeed find one with good storage manufactured by a well known company, their price is awful?. So very highly priced that you want to run away from the store.
After wasting sometime in all these search activities, I realized, how about Maxtor that I have personal experience in the past, I am still using it. Maxtor to me was just about the perfect external drive, though I used other ones like I-Omega drives but Maxtor was quite satisfactory IMHO. Iomega is a good company, Unfortunately, I could not find the storage size of my interest with IOmega I thought I must try Iomega?. They have only upto 1.5TB but not 2TB.Iomega Prestige 1.5 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34474.
Then I thought why not I get the Maxtor storage extended or upgraded to the latest capacity, I found out that Maxtor was bought out and no longer in service. The new company is Seagate in which I had no experience. But, I found a 2TB seagate drive for a great price at Amazon (Amazon affiliated seller store from NJ)?. The same drive is about $50-90 higher than Frys/Best buy is selling price?. I got a Competitive rate and free shipping. I ordered one, received promptly by UPS, it is currently running at my home office.
Simply put it, it is Sleek, fast comes with a good price. Quite good to play around in connecting, installing and downloading the drives into the computer. It is still brand new and just few days old at my desk, thus far, I like it much better than my maxtor One?. I will tell you more about this product in few weeks to months, as I need to follow up with further performance before I say anything. But, for now, I like the competitive price, performance, speed and it is noiseless! Kwl…! Also, no heating issue so far, my Old Maxtor used to have heat if it runs for a long time, let me check this further and update this column here……!.
I got this drive on sale and immediately put about 500GB of data on it, without any issues. It compares to my previous 500GB FreeAgent Pro in terms of speed, though I’ve only used USB. The included backup software is okay-ish, but I prefer to use my own software. You can opt out of installing the Seagate Manager by just moving the installation files to a different folder on your drive.
I’m giving the product only four stars because the day after I got it, the drive started making clicking noises and the connection between the drive and the computer dropped and wouldn’t come back up even after I unplugged the USB and plugged it back in. Out of frustration, I whacked the drive on the side, and everything went back to normal. It’s been about four weeks since then and it’s run perfectly, so hopefully that was an isolated incident.
